Poison is a potential healer, and medicines can be potential poisons – it all depends on proper and careful administration. One of the most significant causes of mortality and morbidity is adverse reactions through medicines. There are debates ongoing about the benefits and disadvantages of drugs. But the therapeutic ratio (TR) is what decides this. A low TR will bring you diseases and adverse reactions from medicines; while a high TR causes the medicines to work quickly towards the benefits.
WHO’s definition for Adverse Drug Reaction says: “Any response to a drug that is noxious and unintended and occurs at doses used in man for the prophylaxis, diagnosis or therapy of disease, or for modification of physiological function”.
How much danger a drug can pose will always depend on the usage and skill of the user and the prescriber , resp. No drug can ever be dangerous if used properly. In fact, the most dangerous drugs have shown all the potential for benefit while curing a disease. Also, adverse effects of some drugs can be envisaged if the pharmacology is known. On the other hand, the most beneficial drugs can prove poison if not used properly in the prescribed manners. Even prescribers must be aware of how to advise the drug to a particular patient. Drugs with lower therapeutic ratios must be avoided or changed. Some drugs, even when taken in little amounts, can result in acute poisoning, and it all depends on how therapeutically they are used.
Adverse reactions to drugs do not only occur when their consumption is ongoing. But some drugs, even after they are ceased to be taken, show adverse responses. Hence, it is very crucial to be careful and alert in case of prescribing and using drugs.
